1) It was much larger than today’s brown bear.
The cave bear could grow very large, with the biggest males weighing several hundred kilograms. Today’s brown bear usually weighs between 150 and 350 kilograms, although size and weight vary by region and sex.
2. It became extinct around 24,000 years ago.
Scientists believe that climate change, the loss of suitable habitats, and food shortages contributed to its extinction.
3. It was not mainly a hunter.
Although it may have looked intimidating, the cave bear mostly ate plants, fruits, and roots. Its teeth and studies of its remains indicate that its diet was predominantly plant-based.
4. Some people mistake it for a dinosaur.
Because of its large skeleton and distinctive shape, some visitors mistake it for a dinosaur. That is why our museum launched the THIS IS NOT … campaign, which raises awareness about the difference between a bear and a dinosaur. Products featuring this design are available in our online shop.
5. It is the mascot of our museum and the first exhibit to welcome you when you visit.
